Enjoying nature on cruises with outdoor activities
On all the trips offered by the major operators in this field there are always a number of optional shore excursions that you can choose to participate in. These can range from looking round the local towns and their galleries and museums, to more extreme activities such as climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia or sailing up a tributary of the Amazon in Brazil. The Caribbean is a well known destination for cruises and on the ones that visit the island of Cozumel, off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsular, you can go on an off-road ride through the jungle. Riding your own 4-wheel ATV, you can explore an 8000 year old coral cave where people from the Mayan civilisation lived when they first arrived on this island. While there you will also get the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal clear waters where many exotic tropical fish can be seen. For a complete contrast, on trips to Alaska, exploring Chilkoot Lake in a sea kayak is one of the activities available for passengers on cruises to this region.

The lake is in an area with wonderful scenery, including mountains and glaciers. It is also home to many brown bears, so you should get the chance to see some of them in their natural habitat. On the other side of the world, if you are on a ship that calls in at the Bay of Islands port in New Zealand then there are trips to the Hokianga at the top of the North Island where you can sandboard down the giant dunes after crossing the harbour on a local launch. Back in the Northern hemisphere, with cruises to Iceland there are trips to explore a glacier on snow truck and drives through areas with beautiful waterfalls as well as the chance to bathe in the hot mineral pools that abound on this volcanic island. If you join a sea voyage visiting Fundy Bay in Canada then you may get the chance to take boat trip through the famous Reversing Falls, which are actually reversing rapids.

On the same route, when calling into Bar Harbor, Maine, you can go on a guided bike tour through Acadia National Park. If you have a look at the cruises offered on the operators’ websites you can select your preferred destination and most of them will have a link you can click to check out all the shore excursions available in that particular area. As well as the ones that I have already mentioned, there are such activities as going down a zip line in the jungle, rafting down rapids, jeep safaris and driving your own dogsled over snowy terrain, depending on where exactly you are going. If you want to be certain that you can join any particular excursion then you should make sure to book them in advance, although you can book them on the cruises, as long as there is still space left – you will have to pay for each trip.
